Vanity Light Styles
Selecting vanity lighting can be complicated, but when you break it down it's really quite simple. Vanity lights should distribute an even illumination of light over the surface of the subject, you.
To give an even, smooth effect with your lights there is a simple rule of thumb, the bigger the light, the more even and smooth the light will be. On the contrary, small light sources will give a harsh, sharp lighting to the subject. You may notice this effect outside during sunny and cloudy days. When the sun is shining down without a cloud in sight it will cast very harsh, dark shadows, whereas when the sky is overcast by clouds the light from the sun is spread out over the entire sky making for an even, near shadowless light.
For mirrors and areas where you want the light to be cast smoothly over your face it is better to use a larger light source or failing that multiple light sources. This could consist of rows of 2 to 5 lights all side by side or by using strip lighting to give even illumination. The lighting can be either overhead or to the sides.
Choosing bulbs for your lighting arrangement is also key to your lighting scheme. Regular tungsten bulbs can do the job just fine, but avoid high wattage bulbs as they may be too intense for your eyes at such a close proximity. Wall sconces may also prove to be an attractive styling selection.
